The Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG II | Art is a full-frame large-aperture prime lens representing the latest evolution of Sigma’s flagship 35mm F1.4 Art line — the series that first defined the Art label’s reputation for optical performance. Available in Sony E-mount and L-Mount, it employs a completely redesigned 15-element, 12-group optical formula with a floating focus system that delivers both enhanced image quality and a significantly more compact body than its predecessor, the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN | Art. At 525g (Sony E-mount) and 96.0mm in length, it is approximately 14% shorter and 20% lighter than the lens it replaces. For photographers looking to explore the wider Sigma lens range, or compare options across the full prime lens collection, both are available to browse.
Key Features:
- Completely redesigned 15-element, 12-group optical construction with 4 high-precision aspherical elements and 2 SLD glass elements for thorough aberration control — the highest optical performance in Sigma’s 35mm F1.4 Art history
- Floating focus system achieves enhanced optical performance and a more compact design — approximately 14% shorter and 20% lighter than the predecessor Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN | Art
- Dual HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) autofocus drives the large focus group with high power and speed for fast, accurate, near-silent AF during both stills and video
- Newly developed AAC (Advanced Amorphous Coating) with a low-refractive-index amorphous layer dramatically reduces reflections, ghosting, and flare
- 11-blade rounded diaphragm maintains a circular shape at all apertures for smooth, natural bokeh with no colour fringing in out-of-focus areas
- Minimised focus breathing — optimised focus group arrangement and aspherical shape suppress angle-of-view shift during focus pulls for clean video recording
- AFL button at two locations, aperture ring with lock switch, and click on/off switch for flexible manual and video operation
- Dust- and splash-resistant construction with water- and oil-repellent front element coating for reliable outdoor use
- Petal-type lens hood with locking mechanism included to shield against stray light and reduce flare in backlit conditions
- 63.4° angle of view on both Sony E-mount and L-Mount full-frame bodies. 67mm filter thread
Perfect For
The Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG II | Art is built for working photographers and serious enthusiasts who require uncompromising optical performance from a 35mm prime in a compact, carry-everywhere body. The 35mm focal length on full frame gives a 63.4° field of view — wide enough for environmental context and intimate street scenes, yet tight enough for natural-looking portraits. Wedding and documentary photographers benefit from the dual HLA autofocus system’s speed and near-silent operation, which avoids disturbing subjects during quiet ceremonies or candid moments. The minimised focus breathing and quiet AF make it equally suited to hybrid shooters who frequently switch between stills and video. Street photographers and travel photographers gain a carry-everyday prime that does not compromise on resolution or bokeh quality. Optical Design and Image Quality
The 35mm F1.4 DG II | Art was designed from the ground up with the goal of surpassing every previous iteration of the Sigma 35mm F1.4 Art series. The 15-element, 12-group construction incorporates new glass materials that were previously difficult to process, alongside four high-precision aspherical elements with the highest surface accuracy Sigma has achieved in this class, and two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements. The combination thoroughly suppresses axial chromatic aberration — the form of colour error most visible in large-aperture lenses, where colour fringing appears along the edges of in-focus subjects and bleeds into bokeh transitions. By controlling this aberration precisely, the lens produces clean, colour-accurate rendering at F1.4 across the full frame, and naturally neutral bokeh with no coloured halo around highlights. The newly developed AAC (Advanced Amorphous Coating) uses a low-refractive-index amorphous layer to reduce surface reflections responsible for ghosting and flare, maintaining contrast in backlit and mixed-light scenes.
Autofocus, Build, and Controls
Sigma’s dual HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) system drives the lens’s large, heavy focus group with the power and speed required for reliable real-world use. The result is fast, accurate, and near-silent autofocus that performs well in continuous subject tracking and in the quiet environments where 35mm lenses are most commonly used — low-light social events, ceremonies, and documentary situations. Focus breathing is minimised through optimisation of both the focus group arrangement and the aspherical element geometry, making focus pulls in video recordings look clean and natural without requiring in-camera correction. The body is constructed from high-precision aluminium and TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) components, achieving the rigidity and durability the Art line demands while contributing to the lightweight overall mass. Two AFL (Auto Focus Lock) buttons are positioned for easy access and can be assigned to functions via compatible camera menus. The aperture ring includes a lock switch to prevent accidental movement and a click on/off switch for silent aperture control during video recording. The lens ships with a dedicated petal-type hood featuring a locking mechanism to prevent accidental detachment. Browse our full cameras for video range to find the ideal body pairing.
