Sensor, Lens & Body

How to keep every part of your camera in perfect condition - the right tools, the right technique, and what never to do.

By Mackie · April 2026 · Photography Advice · 8 min read Essential Guide

Your camera is a precision optical instrument. Dust on the sensor appears as dark spots in every photo. Fingerprints on the lens degrade contrast and sharpness. Grime on the body works its way into buttons and dials. Regular, careful cleaning is not optional - it is part of owning a camera. The good news is that with the right tools and technique, it takes less than ten minutes and costs almost nothing per session.

This guide covers everything: why cleaning matters, what tools to use, step-by-step instructions for every part of the camera, and the mistakes that damage sensors and scratch lenses. We also review four cleaning products available at Carlos.gi - from a comprehensive kit for beginners to a professional sensor cleaning solution.

What This Guide Covers
✓ Why and how often to clean
✓ Safe tools for every part
✓ Step-by-step technique
✓ Mistakes that cause damage
01 - Why It Matters

Why Camera Cleaning Matters

Dust, oil, and moisture are the three enemies of image quality. Sensor dust is the most visible problem - even a single speck of dust on the sensor will appear as a dark blob in photos shot at narrow apertures (f/11 and above). Lens contamination is subtler but equally damaging: fingerprints and smudges scatter light, reducing contrast and creating flare in bright conditions. Body grime is a long-term concern - dirt that works into the camera body can cause buttons to stick and, in extreme cases, reach internal components.

Sensor Dust
Dark spots in photos at f/11+. Visible in sky and plain backgrounds.
Lens Smudges
Reduced contrast, flare, and softness. Fingerprints are the main cause.
Body Grime
Sticky buttons, seized dials, and long-term mechanical wear.
How often should you clean? Wipe the lens after every shoot. Check the sensor monthly or whenever you notice spots in photos. Clean the body every few months, or after shooting in dusty or wet conditions.
02 - The Right Tools

What You Need

Using the wrong tools is the most common cause of camera damage. Never use household cloths, paper towels, or clothing - these scratch optical coatings. Never use compressed air cans on sensors - the propellant can permanently damage the sensor surface. The correct tools are inexpensive and last for years.

Tool Used For Safe On Sensor?
Rocket blower Loose dust on sensor & lens ✓ Yes
Lens cleaning fluid Stubborn smudges on lens glass ✗ No
Microfibre cloth Lens glass, LCD screen, body ✗ No
Lens brush Loose dust on lens glass ✗ No
Sensor swabs Stubborn sensor dust ✓ Yes (wet method)
Lenspen / pen cleaner LCD screens, lens glass ✗ No
Never use: Compressed air cans (propellant damages sensors), paper towels or tissues (scratch coatings), household glass cleaner (contains ammonia - destroys lens coatings), or your breath (moisture and acids from saliva).
03 - Step by Step

How to Clean Each Part

The Lens
Step 1: Use a rocket blower to remove loose dust - hold the lens face-down and blow from the edge inward.

Step 2: Use a lens brush (soft, dedicated) to sweep away any remaining particles.
Step 3: For fingerprints or smudges, apply 1–2 drops of lens cleaning fluid to a microfibre cloth (never directly to the glass). Wipe in a gentle circular motion from centre to edge.
Step 4: Use a dry area of the cloth to buff away any residue.
The Sensor
Step 1: Charge your battery fully - the camera must not power off during sensor cleaning.
Step 2: Enable "sensor cleaning mode" (or "mirror lock-up" on DSLRs) in the camera menu to expose the sensor.
Step 3: Use a rocket blower - insert the nozzle just inside the mount opening and squeeze firmly several times. Do not let the blower touch the sensor.
Step 4: For stubborn dust, use a sensor swab with a drop of sensor cleaning fluid. Swipe once across the sensor in a single smooth motion - do not scrub.
The Camera Body
Step 1: Remove the lens and cap both the body and lens.
Step 2: Use a slightly damp microfibre cloth to wipe the exterior - avoid all ports, buttons, and the mount area.
Step 3: Use a dry cotton swab to clean around buttons and dials where grime accumulates.
Step 4: Clean the lens mount contacts with a dry microfibre cloth - dirty contacts cause autofocus and communication errors.
The LCD Screen
Step 1: Use a Lenspen or screen cleaning pen - the carbon tip removes fingerprints without liquid.
Step 2: For stubborn marks, use a screen cleaning gel (like the Fersay E-5411) applied to a microfibre cloth.
Step 3: Never press hard on the LCD - modern screens are fragile and can crack under pressure.
04 - Common Mistakes

What Not to Do

Mistake 01
Using compressed air on the sensor
The propellant in aerosol cans can permanently stain the sensor. Use a rocket blower only.
Mistake 02
Wiping a dry lens with a cloth
Dust particles act as sandpaper. Always blow or brush first before any cloth contact.
Mistake 03
Breathing on the lens
Breath contains moisture and acids that leave residue and can damage coatings over time.
Mistake 04
Cleaning with a low battery
If the camera powers off mid-sensor clean, the shutter can close on the swab and cause serious damage.
Mistake 05
Using household glass cleaner
Products like Windex contain ammonia which dissolves the multi-coating on camera lenses permanently.
Mistake 06
Scrubbing the sensor
One smooth swipe per pass. Scrubbing redistributes dust and risks scratching the sensor surface.

5-Piece Kit

The Celestron Deluxe Lens Cleaning Kit is the one product we recommend to every new camera owner. It contains everything needed to clean a lens properly: a bottle of lens cleaning fluid, a microfibre cloth, individual lens wipes, a soft-bristle lens brush, and a carry pouch to keep everything together. At £27, it is the most complete solution available at Carlos.gi and covers all the basics in a single purchase.

The lens fluid is safe for all coated optics and works on filters as well as lens glass. The microfibre cloth is large enough to use properly - many cheaper kits include cloths so small they are practically useless. The individual wipes are ideal for travel when you do not want to carry the full kit. This is a Celestron product, so the quality is consistent with a brand that makes precision optical instruments - you are not buying a generic kit.

The RICOH Pentax O-ICK1 is the only product in this guide specifically designed for sensor cleaning. At £44 (reduced from £49), it is a professional-grade solution from a camera manufacturer that understands exactly what the sensor surface requires.

While the RICOH branding suggests it is for Pentax cameras, the swabs and fluid are compatible with all APS-C sensors regardless of brand - Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Fujifilm mirrorless cameras all benefit from this kit. If you shoot at narrow apertures regularly and notice dust spots in your images, this kit will solve the problem. Sensor cleaning is intimidating the first time, but with the right tools and a steady hand, it is straightforward.

B+W is one of the most respected names in optical filtration - the same company that makes the premium B+W filters stocked at Carlos.gi. Their lens and filter cleaning fluid is formulated specifically for coated optical glass, making it safe for multi-coated lenses, UV filters, polarising filters, and ND filters. At £10, it is the most affordable dedicated lens cleaner in the Carlos.gi range and an excellent complement to any microfibre cloth.

Unlike generic cleaning fluids, the B+W formula leaves no residue and evaporates cleanly. It is particularly useful for photographers who use filters regularly - filter glass picks up fingerprints and smudges just as easily as lens glass, and a dedicated fluid makes cleaning quick and safe. If you already own a microfibre cloth and just need a quality fluid to go with it, this is the product to buy.
