The X-M5 sports a compact build like the X-T50 and the X100VI, making it the smallest X-Series body to date, but still mighty in terms of capabilities. Ideal for novice creators, the camera contains a 26.1-megapixel sensor, which is 16x larger than that of most smartphones. It records at a maximum resolution of 6.2K at a 3:2 aspect ratio, which provides an extremely high-quality replacement to mobile devices without adding any bulkiness.
FUJIFILM X-M5 Camera
One of FUJIFILM’S trademarks is the quality of their film simulations, which combine the nostalgic and legendary colors of their film era—all at a click away. The X-M5 introduces 20 film simulators, eight of which can be accessed on the dial directly and three that can be user-selected and assigned to the three FS settings on the dial. The simulators go perfectly with the new Vlog Mode, which provides several key options to create engaging content.
Two of these interesting features include the Short Movie Mode, which allows the user to select the desired time for their short movie and once the record button is pressed it automatically crops to a 9:16 vertical format without needing to rotate the camera. It also allows you to share directly to social media from the X App. Another is the product Priority Mode, which automatically switches focus to a product placed in front the camera, this is ideal for product reviews and reveals.
Features
The X-M5 was designed to address the full spectrum of contemporary content creation, excelling in both audio and video capture. The camera has three built-in microphones and four sound capture modes - Surround, Front Priority, Back Priority, and Front & Back Priority - to optimize sound-gathering for specific situations. A 3.5mm microphone socket allows further control over the soundscape, while new in-camera algorithms enable both voice enhancement and environmental noise reduction.
Capable of delivering open-gate, 6.2K video at up to 29.97 fps, the X-M5 can deploy every pixel on the 3:2 native aspect ratio sensor toward high-quality video. The camera combines this elevated image quality with several self-tape-oriented features, most of which are easily accessible in the camera's Vlog mode.
- Background Defocus mode blurs the background to focus on the camera's main subject.
- Product Priority mode automatically switches focus to a product placed closer to the camera, ideal for reviews and demonstrations.
- Portrait Enhancer mode applies skin-smoothening algorithms in Weak, Medium, and Strong options.
- 9:16 Short Movie mode offers a cropped 9:16 vertical recording option in 15, 30, and 60 second options for internet-ready content straight from the camera.
Additionally, a prominent red outline appears around the screen when the camera is recording. The X-M5 further augments the video recording experience with the X-Processor 5's AI-assisted autofocus, which includes eye-tracking and subject recognition. Two Log modes for color grading simplify the post-production process, and the camera's variety of video sizes and frame rates includes slow-motion video at 60 fps in 4K and up to 240 fps in Full HD.
Renowned for its color science, FUJIFILM has outfitted the X-M5 with 20 Film Simulation modes to reproduce the look and feel of several of the company's storied film types. The camera's true-to-life results can be interpreted with these film simulations, eight of which are accessible on one of the camera's top dials. The modes can simplify workflows by producing edited material straight out of the camera.
In addition to simulating specific film types, a Grain Effect mode is also available to replicate the look of old film photos with an organic textured appearance. Color Chrome and Color Chrome Blue effects are also available to deepen color, tonal response, and gradation with higher saturation colors.
The X-M5 is the smallest and lightest X-series body, weighing 12.5 oz without a lens and spanning 4.4" wide. Keeping with the FUJIFILM aesthetic and X-series design philosophy, the black rangefinder-style body comes with a series of top dials to set mode, film simulation, and adjust settings. The interchangeable lens mount accepts any of the more than 35 X-series lenses, with the option to connect other lenses with an appropriate, optional adapter.
The camera features a 3" articulating LCD touchscreen optimized for self-taping. Anticipating the needs of creators, FUJIFILM has shifted the locations of connector ports to the right side of the camera, eliminating wires interference with the monitor. The microphone port has also been moved from the side of the camera to the rear to further accommodate content creation accessories.
- Integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity allows for wirelessly sharing images to a mobile device or to use the device to remotely control the camera.
- Frame.io Camera to Cloud integration allows delivery of photos or video straight to the cloud moments after they're created.
- Single SD memory card slot supports up to the UHS-I standard.
- Included NP-W126S battery provides up to approximately 45 minutes of continuous 6K capture or up to 440 images in Economy mode.
