Combining a comfortable wide-angle design with an ultra-fast maximum aperture, the 16mm f/1.4 DC DN is part of Sigma's Contemporary series of lenses and designed for use with Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras. Characterized by its bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, this lens is adept at working in low-light conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field for selective focus control.

The optical design makes use of several low dispersion and aspherical elements, which control color fringing and various aberrations in order to provide high sharpness and clarity throughout the aperture range. Individual elements also feature a super multilayered coating to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Benefitting the optical assets, this lens also sports a stepping AF motor for quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance that suits both still photography as well as video applications.

A specialised control algorithm has been developed, which optimises AF drive and communication speed specifically for Canon RF mount interchangeable cameras. This enables high-speed autofocus while also supporting Servo AF and in-camera aberration correction with supported bodies.

The lens mount also features rubber sealing, ensuring reliable performance across a range of shooting environments including during inclement conditions.

Made from Thermally Stable Composite (TSC), the lens barrel and aperture components are built for precision and durability. TSC’s elasticity minimises deformation and reduces gaps between parts over time, enhancing the longevity and performance of the lens. This material ensures smooth aperture operation and supports the compact design, while also improving the precision of the internal mechanisms that house the focus lens group.

Professional-Level Image Quality

The optical design of this lens comprises 16 elements in 13 groups, including three FLD glass elements, two SLD glass elements, and two precision-moulded aspherical elements. These advanced components work together to minimise optical aberrations and deliver exceptional resolution, even at wide-open apertures and across the entire aperture range.

The two aspherical elements are crafted with ultra-high precision, polished to tolerances of less than 10 nanometres. This meticulous design reduces the "onion ring" effect often associated with aspherical lenses, ensuring smooth, clear image quality throughout the frame.

Additionally, the optical system is carefully engineered to gently bend light, reducing sagittal coma flare and maintaining optimal performance from the centre of the frame to the edges. The result is a lens that produces smooth, round bokeh with consistent light distribution, offering excellent visual quality across every part of the image.

Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting which is often caused by strong light sources, such as backlit scenes.
